How Long Does Paint Protection Film Last?

The advertised number is 10 years. The real number, in practice, depends on the film, the installer, the climate and the owner. Here is what we see across hundreds of long-term installs.

The warranty number

Premium TPU films carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, peeling and bubbling. The warranty is written into the install — if the film fails within 10 years from a manufacturing defect, we remove and replace it at no cost.

Real-world lifespan

In Southern Oregon's dry summer / wet winter climate, we see TPU film installs holding up at the 8–10 year mark with no visible degradation when maintained properly. Coastal salt-air vehicles age slightly faster. Garage-kept cars age slightly slower. Realistically, plan for a 10-year service life.

What shortens lifespan

Automatic car washes with abrasive brushes (the worst offender), petroleum-based degreasers used on film edges, neglecting to clean bug splatter and bird droppings promptly, and skipping the periodic ceramic top-up that we include with most installs. Avoiding these four behaviors easily adds 2–3 years.

What extends lifespan

Hand washing or touchless car washes, prompt removal of bug splatter, an annual ceramic top-coat, and storing the vehicle out of direct sun when possible. With those four habits, we routinely see installs looking nearly new at 10+ years.
